Otoplasty for Teens

Irregularity in the ears can cause people to be less confident about their facial appearance. While these conditions can emotionally damage men and women of all ages, younger individuals are often the most affected. With many teenagers and children out of school for the summer, perhaps there is no better time to undergo cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of the ears than now. At his Utah practice, Dr. Trenton Jones regularly performs otoplasty (ear surgery) to help younger people improve the appearance of their ears.

Nearly 7,000 otoplasty procedures were performed last year on individuals 13-19.

Otoplasty can correct the following conditions:
Excessively large ears
Protruding ears
Asymmetry in one or both of the ears
Dissatisfaction with a previous otoplasty
How Is Otoplasty Performed?
Each otoplasty procedure is performed on an outpatient basis with the patient under general anesthesia. Dr. Jones makes incisions on the back of the ears or the front folds to conceal scarring, and pins the ears back and/or reshapes them to reveal a more aesthetically pleasing appearance. He then closes the incisions with sutures.

What Happens After Surgery?
After ear surgery is complete, bandages are applied to the incisions, and the ears are wrapped with gauze. Cold compresses and prescribed medication will help reduce swelling and discomfort during the first few days. In most instances, bandages and sutures are removed about a week after treatment.

When Will the Results Become Apparent?
Results from otoplasty will be apparent immediately after the bandages are removed and will continue to improve as the swelling diminishes over time. Patients tend to be very satisfied with the outcome of otoplasty surgery, and the results are meant to be permanent. In many instances, patients develop a new outlook on life, knowing that they no longer have to feel embarrassed about their ears.
