The Mommy Makeover is a combination of cosmetic procedures that help restore a mother’s pre-pregnancy body. Depending on the woman’s desires, she can choose a breast lift, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and/or liposuction to complete her transformation.
This dynamic procedure has grown rapidly in popularity over the last few years, which has many people asking us about its benefits. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the Mommy Makeover.
1. Do I need a breast lift or a breast augmentation?
Since a breast lift and a breast augmentation achieve different results, many women choose to combine these two procedures. A breast lift will lift the breasts to a more youthful position, while a breast augmentation will increase the size and improve the shape of the breasts. For women who have experienced the volume loss and sagging (ptosis) that often occurs after childbirth and nursing, this procedure combination is a great choice.
2. Do I need a tummy tuck or liposuction?
If you have significantly loose skin in your upper or lower abdomen, a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is likely a better choice. Liposuction can remove excess fat from the abdomen (and many other areas), but it cannot tighten loose skin. Tummy tuck surgery is also a better option for women with separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) because it will literally tighten the abdominal wall to create a more streamlined silhouette. Both procedures are often performed together for optimal results.
3. How much weight will I lose with liposuction or abdominoplasty?
The average amount of weight lost with liposuction or abdominoplasty is only about five pounds. Most patients should be at or near their ideal weight before considering this procedure, as it is not designed for weight loss.
4. Will a tummy tuck remove stretch marks?
If stretch marks appear on the skin that will be removed during tummy tuck surgery, they will also be removed.
5. What happens if I gain weight or become pregnant after surgery?
If you gain a significant amount of weight or become pregnant after surgery, you may “undo” your surgical results to some extent as the skin is stretched.
6. How long is recovery?
Recovery time with Mommy Makeover surgery varies among patients and depending on the procedures performed, but most women feel ready to resume normal activities after two weeks and exercise after six weeks. Swelling will subside significantly after three weeks, but some degree of swelling may not completely disappear for up to a year.
