Cosmetic Surgery in Men Is More Common Than You Think

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), cosmetic surgery among men is on the rise. With male vanity reaching new peaks all the time, it’s no wonder that more and more men are consulting with their plastic surgeons and taking the plunge.

Non-Surgical Procedures
Whether they are seeking a boost in self-esteem, competing with young bucks at work, or trying to reel in that special someone, more males are opting to boost their looks with quick in-and-out procedures without a lot of bruising or healing time. Perhaps eager to get back into the office, the number of minimally-invasive procedures jumped 27% from 2011.

With an increase of 314% since 2000, almost 390,000 men received treatments with BOTOX® Cosmetic in 2012. That same year, more than 376,000 men received laser hair removal and microdermabrasion. Other top cosmetic skin treatments that men are on the lookout for are soft tissue fillers, such as Restylane®, JUVÉDERM®, or RADIESSE®; chemical peels; and laser facial skin treatments.

Plastic Surgery Procedures
More and more men are also choosing to undergo plastic surgery. From nose surgery (rhinoplasty) and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to liposuction, the inflation of cosmetic surgery in men is growing exponentially. However, growing the quickest in popularity among men are male breast reductions and facelifts.

Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia is the benign enlargement or over-development of breast tissue in males. This condition can occur in men of any age, but it is usually the result of hormonal changes, heredity, or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia may impair a man’s self-confidence and have negative effects on intimate relationships. Gynecomastia surgery, also called male breast reduction, can bring life-changing results. Close to 23,000 gynecomastia surgeries were performed in 2013, up 11 percent from the previous year.

Facelift
Facelifts are another procedure that more men are choosing to undergo, with close to 133,000 performed in 2013 alone, up by six percent from 2012. Not only do men want to keep up with their good looking women, but they also need to stay in the competition with the younger lads climbing the workforce ladder. Hence, plastic surgeons are accounting for more male patients on their schedule.
