As time passes, pregnancy, nursing, excessive weight loss, and gravity can have adverse effects on your breasts, causing them to lose their elasticity, firmness, and shape. This creates a sagging appearance. A breast lift (Mastopexy) is a procedure that corrects this condition using a combination of removing excess breast skin, thus tightening your skin, and raising your breast. You may also require implants to restore your breasts to their natural shape and size. There are several degrees of breast lifts that are in fact dependant on your individual anatomy and these options will be discussed with you during your consultation. The procedure is done under general anesthesia and lasts anywhere from one to three hours depending on the type of lift you are having done.
You are a good candidate for a breast lift if you are healthy, emotionally stable and realistic about the result you would like to achieve. A breast lift can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence. The best results are achieved on women with small to medium sized, sagging breasts due to loss of skin elasticity secondary to pregnancy and/or nursing, or weight loss. If you are planning to have more children you may want to postpone surgery, as the process of pregnancy and breast-feeding may change the final result of this surgery.
Despite the marvelous benefits to undergoing breast lift surgery, as with any surgical procedure there is always the possibility of complications occurring. Possible complications associated with breast lift include bleeding and infection following surgery, which may cause scars to widen. (Poor healing and wider scars are more common in smokers.) The procedure can possibly leave you with different positioned nipples, or a loss of sensation in the nipple or breast.
Following surgery, detailed instructions will be given to you for your postoperative care and activity. It is important for you to follow these instructions in order to minimize any complications and to help achieve your best results. Dr. Jones will also advise you as to when you can return to your normal activities. Most patients are able to return to work within a few days and to return to more strenuous activities in about three weeks following surgery.
