Belt Lipectomy

A belt Lipectomy is a major surgical procedure in which excess skin and fat are excised from lower back/hip area.  Belt Lipectomy is sometimes called a reverse Abdominoplasty and results in a significant improvement of the overall trunk.  The results are the “love handles” are gone, the lateral thighs and buttocks are lifted, and when combined with liposuction, is used to improve contour of the thighs.

Persons who have experienced a significant weight loss, either due to bariatric surgery or natural weight loss, who have redundant lateral flank and hip tissue, and/or sagging of the buttocks, are good candidates for belt Lipectomy. Despite significant weight loss, appearance and body image may be unacceptable due to hanging skin and tissue. Quite often these people still find it difficult to find clothing that fits well.

Patients should be seeking improvement, but not perfection, and be willing to accept scars.  The best candidates for belt Lipectomy surgery are men or women in good health, at a stable weight, and relatively good shape, but are bothered by a large fat deposit or loose skin that does not respond to diet or exercise. Those who are considering losing a significant amount of weight, or women still planning future pregnancies, may want to consider waiting before undergoing the belt Lipectomy procedure.

The procedure is done under general anesthesia and lasts anywhere from one to three hours depending on the amount of tissue removed.  Some of these risks of belt Lipectomy surgery include infection and blood clots. These can be treated easily and are rare. The surgery can improve the appearance of the trunk, however the procedure has been known to leave scarring. Some scarring can be severe and may require a second operation.

There are other alternatives to the belt Lipectomy procedure, including undergoing liposuction in order to remove the excess fat.  Please consult with Dr. Jones as to which procedure will best meet your needs.

Following belt Lipectomy surgery, detailed instructions are given to the patient as to postoperative care and activity. It is important for a patient to follow these instructions in order to minimize any complications and to help achieve the best results. Dr. Jones will also advise the patient as to when they can return to their normal activities. Most patients are able to return to work within one to two weeks, and more strenuous activities in about three weeks following surgery.
